Le Thanh Vu (L ) and Hoang Cao Nguyen have been sentenced to death and life imprisonment respectively for murder

A teenaged house helper in Ho Chi Minh City was sentenced to death Sunday and another given a life sentence after they severely injured their employer and killed his daughter in a plan to rob the family’s money.

Le Thanh Vu, 19, who killed the 19-year-old daughter, was awarded the death sentence. Vu, who had come to HCMC from the Mekong Delta’s Tien Giang Province, was hired city couple in April 2008 to help with work at home and their pork shop, the local news website Vnexpress reported.

Hoang Cao Nguyen, a 20-year-old youth from Hue, was hired a year later. Nguyen also tried to kill the man who hired him, but failed, leaving his victim permanently disabled. Doctors have estimated the disability at 30 percent.

Vu and Nguyen were given daily meals and stayed in the same house with the family.

According to the indictment, Nguyen once told Vu that he planned to work for the pork sellers temporarily and would find a way to rob them.

Vu responded that he also needed money to pay his home rent as he had moved to live with his girlfriend and to retrieve his motorbike from the police after an accident.

They knew the couple brought home a lot of money at the end of the day, but could not manage to steal it.

So on June 15 last year, they planned to kill the entire family, including two children.

They armed themselves with knives and attacked the father and daughter as the mother and son had left the house.

The victims were stabbed several times, the indictment said.

Vu and Nguyen both admitted their intention to commit murder but accused each other of planning it.
