Khmer oxen race in the Mekong Delta. Each race involves two contestants who drive a pair of oxen along a 120-meter stretch of paddy field. |
Next month, the Mekong Delta’s An Giang Province will hold a traditional oxen race as part of an annual Khmer festival.
Oxen racing has always been a crucial part in the celebration of the Khmer Dolta Festival, before the start of autumn-winter crops. It attracts a lot of tourists from across the country and worldwide.
In each race, two men drive a pair of oxen, whipping them with a rattan switch or a piece of wood to make them race along a muddy 120-meter track.
Nearly 70 pairs of oxen have been registered for this year.
This year’s race has been opened to contestants from nearby provinces, including Cambodia’s Takeo Province.
This year, the 19th oxen race will take place on October 5 at the temple courtyard of Ta Miet in Tri Ton District. Victoria Hotels & Resorts is offering an Oxen Race Day package - a three-day stay from October 4 to 6 at the grand colonial style hotel along the Bassac River for US$224 per person.
