Remains of 55 war martyrs unearthed in central Vietnam

The remains of 55 Vietnamese soldiers who died in the Vietnam War have been unearthed in the central province of Quang Ngai, local news websiteVnExpress reported.

The remains of 47 soldiers were found in a ditch in Nghia Hanh District’s Cho Chua Town, while the others were discovered in a mass grave some 300 meters away, the news source said.

Nguyen Cao Tu, a representative from the Quang Ngai Military Headquarters, said personal effects were found in the graves.

Witnesses have proved that the remains belonged to soldiers from various divisions which led an attack against US forces on January 1-2 1968 along with the C506A company.

VnExpress also quoted Pham Dinh Nghiep, former deputy chief of C506A, as saying that during the attack, part of the company was killed by mines.

Witnesses said several other graves are still to be unfound across the district.

The excavation is ongoing.
