Vietnam, Russia to sign pact on nuclear power plant

Vietnam will sign an agreement with Russia to build a nuclear power plant during President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to the country late this month,VnExpress reported Friday.
State-owned Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) is discussing the project with Russia's Rosatom Nuclear Energy State Corporationon, the news website quoted Phan Minh Tuan, chief of the EVN’s project preparation board, as saying.
If both agree on the terms, construction will likely start in 2013, Tuan said.
The plant was first planned to break ground in the central province of Ninh Thuan in 2014 and to start operating in 2020 with a total investment of VND200 trillion ($10.2 billion).
Another plant will also be built in Ninh Thuan by 2020, bringing the total capacity to 4,000 megawatts.
The government plans to build six additional plants in the central region through 2030.
