Beauty salons offering illegal breast implants
Though the Ministry of Health has banned private establishments from offering breast implants, many in Hanoi are ignoring the law.Nguyen Viet Cuong, the chief inspector of the Hanoi Department of Health, said the department has recently discovered many beauty salons offering cosmetic services in Hanoi that are violating the law.Two beauty salons, one on Xa Dan Street and the other on Le Van Huu Street, advertised modern breast implant procedures despite the law against it.Dr. Bach Minh Tien, head of the plastic surgery of the Vietnam-Cuba Hospital, said there have been several reported deaths after breast implant surgery in Hanoi and HCMC over the last five years.Many customers who received treatment at unlicensed beauty salons had to go to his hospital to fix the faults made by these establishments, he said.“The private beauty salons are only permitted to offer simple cosmetic treatments like eyelid tattoo or lip tattoos,” he said.Those who do offer more simple cosmetic surgery still need a permit. One beauty salon on Nguyen Hong Street advertised eyelid and lip tattoos and liposuction even though it has not been granted a permit from the Hanoi Department of Health.Cuong said five beauty salons were fined VND27 million for advertising services that they have not been registered with the authorities.Tien said customers should only receive cosmetic surgery and treatments at accredited and licensed plastic surgery departments.In early April, a woman died after a breast implant surgery in a private beauty salon in Hanoi.
