Vietnamese classics to take on comic form in Japan

The Vietnam-Japan Culture Exchange Center and Phan Thi publishing house have signed a deal to publish some of Vietnam’s most popular literary works in comic book form in Japanese.
“Danh Tac Viet Nam” (Famous Vietnamese Literary Works), aimed at young readers, is expected to hit bookshelves in Japan late next month, with the collection to include works like “Chi Pheo” by Nam Cao and “Giong To” (Thunderstorm) by Vu Trong Phung.
Phan Thi has published a slew of comics in Vietnamese in the last 10 years, including “Than Dong Dat Viet” (Vietnamese Child Prodigies) and “Truyen Hay Su Viet” (Interesting Stories of Vietnamese History).
Many Vietnamese works have been translated and published in Japanese, including “Chinh phu ngam khuc” by Doan Thi Diem, “Luc Van Tien” by Nguyen Dinh Chieu, “Noi buon chien tranh” by Bao Ninh, and the epic “Truyen Kieu” by Nguyen Du.
Japan is one of the bastions of comic books.
