Hundreds of curiosity seekers flocked to Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi to witness the age-old and wounded turtle surfacing again for over one hour at around 10:00 am this morning (March 4).
“The turle’s health is getting worse,” said locals.
According to a decision by the Hanoi conference last week, the turtle, believed to be hundreds of years old, will be treated on a small tower in the middle of the lake and a “smart pool” containing turtle-friendly environment will be installed to house the creature.
The local authorities are implementing a plan to cure the turtle in the second phase, in which the creature is expected to be lured down and stay there during its recuperation period. said an official of Hanoi’s Department of Science and Technology.
This treatment plan is expected to run until June.
According to Dr. Ha Dinh Duc, who has been doing research on the ancient turtle for over 20 years, because of the cold weather and the unfinished smart pool, authorities have yet to bring the turtle to the Tower for treatment.
A worker at the Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Company said that the smart pool’s framework will be completed today to save the poor creature.
The age-old creature is currently a hot topic after Hanoi government set up a special committee to care for the animal’s wounds – sustained from fish hooks and pollution-related problems.
