No Japan radioactive cloud over Vietnam: scientist
No radioactive clouds have been found over Vietnam following the explosion at a Japanese nuclear plant a few days ago, the director of the Da Lat Nuclear Research Institute assured yesterday.
Asst Prof Dr Nguyen Nhi Dien said after the explosion at Fukushima, the Institute has continuously monitored radioactive levels.
Since its establishment in 1984, the Institute discovered radioactivity in Vietnam just once, he said, and that was in June 1986 following the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine two months earlier.
As for the safety of the Da Lat nuclear reactor, Dr Dien said it can survive earthquakes of up to magnitude 7.0 and will automatically shut down when a problem occurs.
For the past 27 years the reactor has been operating well and safely, without any radioactive leaks, he added.
