The capital city’s Thang Long Royal citadel is among 39 nominees from 33 nations that are being considered for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
Among the 39 nominees, eight are natural, 29 cultural, and two are natural-cultural heritage sites. The UN body is considering this issue at its 34th session held in Brazil from July 25 to August 3.
The UNESCO session will also assess the preservation by countries of their heritage, especially the 147 sites that have been recognized as world heritage sites previously.
There are 31 world heritage sites which are in danger of being ruined completely and 36 that need special care and restoration, according to the UN body.
These sites have been damaged by several factors including environmental pollution, urbanization, bad tourism administration, wars and natural calamities.
Vietnam has nine vestiges that have been recognized as World Heritage sites including the old imperial capital of Hue, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An Town, the My Son Sanctuary, and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.
