Gold mine collapse kills two in northern Vietnam

Two people were killed when a gold mine collapsed in the northern province of Lao Cai Sunday, Vietnamnet reported.

The news website reported that this is the second such disaster in a single month.  

The latest accident took place in Van Ban District’s Ma Xa Phin when Trieu Tan Su, 25, and his brother-in-law were looking for gold in an illegal mine, witnesses said.

The pair wer buried in rubble; their bodies weren’t discovered until more than four hours later, according to the news source.

On August 5 another accident happened at the same place, killing more than ten people. Related agencies attributed it to heavy rains. Illegal mines typically lack any safety measures or structural integrity.

More than 200 illegal gold mines are currently operating in Ma Xa Phin,Vietnamnet reported.
