Overseas student to represent Vietnam at Miss World 2010

Vietnam has chosen the first runner up from the Miss Vietnam World 2010 contest to represent the country at Miss World 2010 in China next month, local media have said.
The Department of Performing Arts under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Wednesday issued a statement allowing Nguyen Ngoc Kieu Khanh to represent Vietnam at the beauty contest from October 1 to 30 at Sanya, a port city in Hai Nan, China.
Earlier on Monday, the entertainment group Elite Vietnam, in charge of sending Vietnamese representatives to international beauty contests, had asked the department to send Khanh to the competition put on by the London-based Miss World Organization.
Vinpearl Tourism and Commerce Joint Stock Company based in the central coastal town of Nha Trang will cover all her expenses.
The 19-year-old Vietnamese student arrived in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday from Germany, where she is studying, and started training and preparing outfits for the contest with Elite experts.
Khanh has just finished high school and completed her college entrance application in Germany. She said that participating in the contest will not affect her studies.
Thuy Nga, the executive director of Elite, told local news website Dan Tri that they chose Khanh because she’s smart and mature compared to most Vietnamese girls at her age.
The Miss World website has also loaded photos of Khanh as the Vietnamese representative this year. 2010 marks the ninth year that Vietnam has taken part in the contest.
Many audiences around the country and abroad expected Khanh to win the Miss Vietnam World pageant last month in the central coastal town of Nha Trang. Instead, she was named winner of the Beach Beauty title.
During an interview with local news website Ngoi Sao (Star), Khanh said that Elite Vietnam proposed that she represent Vietnam at either Miss Earth or Miss World immediately after her success at Miss Vietnam World.
“I’m very happy and ready to represent Vietnam in any contest,” she said.
Khanh said she had bought souvenirs to give to the other contestants to introduce Vietnam to them.
The Miss World 2010 finale on October 30 will see Khanh compete with 121 beauties from other countries.
She will wear dresses by local designers and clothes from Danish designer Elisabeth Rolskov.
The finale will be broadcast to more than 2.5 billion television viewers worldwide.
This year features the most participants so far and it marks the 60th anniversary of the Miss World contest.
