Japan suggests cooperaton on high-speed railroad

Japan has proposed that it cooperates with Vietnam in making plans for two high-speed railway routes, Vietnam Railways has said.

The proposal was made in a diplomatic note that the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam sent to the Ministry of Planning and Investment and Japan International Cooperation Agency’s office in Vietnam on November 2, according to the state-owned corporation.

Under the proposal, Japan suggested providing technical aid to Vietnam in studying projects to build two sections between Hanoi and the central town of Vinh in Nghe An province, and between Ho Chi Minh City and the central coastal town of Nha Trang as part of its programs in the fiscal year of 2010.

The ministry later agreed on the proposal in a reply sent to the Japanese Embassy.

In August, Vietnam launched feasibility studies on the two railway sections which are part of a controversial railway project linking Hanoi and HCMC.

At the National Assembly’s sitting in June, lawmakers voted out the US$56 billion project, saying it was economically unsound, and that further studies on its feasibility were needed.

The government has asked ministries to conduct feasibility studies and it was yet to plan building the route, local news website VnExpress quoted Minister of Transport Ho Nghia Dung as saying.
