Road accidents up in Vietnam in 2010
The number of traffic accidents in Vietnam has increased by 1,788 cases and the injury toll is also up by 2,544 cases so far this year, according to the latest statistics.
The road crash fatalities, on the other hand, have dropped by 47 cases and the number of traffic congestion incidents in big cities has also taken a downward turn, with 19 cases fewer than last year.
Some provinces that witness the lower number of fatalities in 2010 are Bac Kan, Dien Bien, Nam Dinh, and Yen Bai in the North, and Tra Vinh in the West while northern province Lai Chau, central Kon Tum and western Bac Lieu and Hau Giang see a higher number of traffic-related deaths, according to police sources.
In other related news, with a few more days to go before we enter 2011, Ho Chi Minh City police have succeeded in breaking up 270 motorcycle-racing gangs this year.
The number of traffic accidents in the city has dropped by 969 cases and the number of traffic-related deaths is also down at 788, 70 cases less than last year. Meanwhile, the number of injures is also brought down to 404, 44 cases fewer compared to the same period last year.
For 2011, the authorities will try to further reduce the traffic death tolls, road accidents, and congestion by increasing street patrols and improving road infrastructure, said the government.
All things considered, Than Van Lanh, chief of National Traffic Safety Committee, said that the government plan for this year has been well achieved.
