Vietnam received 4.6 million foreign tourists in the first 11 months of this year, a 36.5 percent increase over the same period last year, the government said.
In November alone, foreign arrivals reached 428,300, up 2.6 percent from October, the government said in a report on Tuesday, citing the General Statistics Office in Hanoi.
The 11-month figure has exceeded the target of 4.5 million visitors for the whole of 2010 set by the National Administration of Tourism.
According to the government, Vietnam may be able to attract more than 5 million tourists by the end of this year, surpassing the record of 4.23 million in 2008.
The tourism industry is expected to generate US$4.6 billion for the country, a sharp increase from last year’s $3.05 billion.
The government said an economic recovery has spurred an influx of travelers.
In addition, tourism officials noted that Vietnam has hosted many special events this year, including the millennial celebration for Thang Long-Hanoi.
Cambodia topped the list of fast-growing markets with an increase of 99.9 percent in the number of arrivals, followed by China (76.7 percent) and Thailand (42.6 percent).
