New car number plates cost up to VND20 mln

The Ministry of Finance has set license plate registration fees for cars ten-fold increase from the current VND2 in a bid to reduce traffic jam in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, the country’s two largest cities.
Starting February 5, cars with less than cars with less than 10 seats that are not used for passenger transportation business have to pay VND20 million (US$1,026) for a new number plate.
The car number plate fees at other places range from VND200,000 to VND1 million.
The ministry has also hiked the license plate fees on motorcycles to as much as VND4 million per vehicle depending on their value.
The fee was just VND500,000 per motorcycle before.
The ministry’s latest move has been based on proposals made by HCMC and Hanoi, which are coping with their rapid expanding number of vehicles.
