Australian krump to hit Hanoi’s universities

Australian krump dance band Grrilla Step this week will perform their moves at Hanoi’s universities.
On a tour organised by the Australian Embassy in Hanoi in collaboration with the Australian Trade Commission and the Hanoi-based National Economics University’s Youth Union, the group will give a free concert titled “Summer Krump” for Hanoi students on the school’s campus on May 27.
They will also conduct dance exchanges with students at Hanoi RMIT University and participate in the CAMA music festival on May 28 in the capital city to raise money for the Flora and Fauna International organization.
Grrilla Step, with one DJ, four dancers and four drummers, is at present the only krump band in the world.
Krump is a type of street dance popularized since 2000 in the US that is characterized by free, expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic movements involving the arms, head, legs, chest, and feet. Similar to breakdance, but more aggressive, krump features exaggerated and highly energetic standing moves. A dancer gives voice to his ‘character,’ while attempting to advance through three levels of intensity (krump, buck and amp).
Grrilla Step has taken krump to a new level. They create their unique “Pacific style” with influences from the group members’ various homelands in Torres Strait Islands, Cook Islands, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and New Zealand.
