‘Sorrow of War’ to be published again in Vietnam

“Noi buon chien tranh” (Sorrow of War), the book that recently won the Nikkei Asia Prize for Culture in Japan, will be published in Vietnam by Tre Publishing House.
The book, first published in Vietnam in 1990 by the Association of Writers Publishing House, is based on its author Bao Ninh’s experience as a soldier during the Vietnam War.
Renamed "Status of love" and republished in 2003, it tells the story of a soldier, Kien, his life after the war, and his memories of the war.
It was translated into Japanese in 1997 and 1999 and has made Ninh the first Vietnamese to win the Nikkei Asia Prize, which is given for outstanding achievements that improve the quality of life in Asia and contribute to regional stability.
British newspaper The Guardian has gushed over the book, saying it is worthy of a Pulitzer Prize, the US award for achievements in journalism, literature, and music.
“Sorrow of War” will be honored by Tre Publishing House by placing it in its collection titled “One writer – one book” which will showcase outstanding works and writers in Vietnam over the years.
It will be joined by “Mua la rung trong vuon” (Garden in the season of falling leaves) by Ma Van Khang, “Thoi xa vang” (The past) by Le Luu, “Đat lua” (Fire land) by Nguyen Quang Sang, and “Vet thuong thu 13” (The 13th wound) by Trang The Hy.
