Tuoitrenews to carry portions of children’s book

Tuoitrenews will publish excerpts from award-winning children’s novel “Vừa Nhắm Mắt, Vừa Mở Cửa Sổ” (Open the window, eyes closed) in both the original Vietnamese and English this week.
Written by painter and writer Nguyen Ngoc Thuan, it was translated by Truong Tiep Truong and has been sold abroad by Tre (Youth) publishing house.
The novel was well-received by Vietnamese critics and readers when it was published in 2004.
Despite being a novel for children, "Open the windows, eyes closed" has also been popular with adults.
Literature critic Dr Nguyen Thi Minh Thai says “Open The Windows, Eyes Closed,” which is in the form of stories from the perspective of a 10-year-old boy named Cuong, helps children realize that the world of their imagination is not just a dream that is unattainable.
The novel won the top prize at the 3rd Children’s Literature Writing Contest in 2002 besides several international awards.
In 2007, after a Swedish publisher translated and published the book, it won the Peter Pan Prize from the International Committee for Children’s Books.
Nguyen Ngoc Thuan, who was born in 1972 in Binh Thuan Province, graduated from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts.
After “Open The Windows, Eyes Closed,” he has written several other popular books like “Mot Thien Duong Nam Mong,” “Tren Doi Cao Chan Bay Thien Su,” and “Cha, Con, va Tau Bay.”
