Sierra Leone buys 50,000 tons of rice from Vietnam
Vietnam and Sierra Leone on June 21 signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Hanoi under which the latter will import 50,000 tons of rice.
This is part of 100,000 tons to be shipped to the African nation in 2011-2015.
The MoU, signed by the ministers of industry and trade of the two countries, serves as a legal basis to help develop a strategic partnership on food supply between the two.
With a population of 5 million, Sierra Leone has in recent years expressed interest in importing rice from Vietnam.
It imported 14,000 tons worth US$8.04 million in 2010, accounting for 40 percent of total imports from the Southeast Asian country.
