‘Upstream Side,’ a look into lives of minorities

An exhibition featuring the lives of ethnic minorities in the northern mountainous regions by artist Nguyen Bao Toan has opened at the Viet Art Center in Hanoi.
Titled “Upstream Side,” the exhibition showcases paintings, ceramic works and wood sculptures he made while living with minorities.
The exhibition is divided into three main topics. The first topic showcases ceramic works with carved patterns about ethnic markets. The second is an installation of wood sculptures of minorities farming. The last features portraits drawn on Rhamnoneuron paper.
Toan, 60, was born in Hanoi. He left the city for mountainous regions at the age of 13. Most of his work is about the people and land there.
The exhibition is at 42 Yet Kieu and will run until June 10.
