US aircraft carrier to patrol East Sea: report
The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier George Washington Sunday left the Yokosuka US Navy port in Japan to conduct patrol over the western Pacific, reported Mainichi Newspaper of Japan.
The move came amid concerns about heightened presence of Chinese naval ships in the area.
The US carrier in cooperation with allies will carry out patrol over the waters, including the East Sea in order to maintain peace and stability in the Pacific Ocean.
Mainichi quoted the carrier's commander Capt. David Lausman as saying before departure that the joint operation is aimed at stabilizing the entire region, without naming any specific country subject to the patrols.
It took us six months to prepare for the event, Lausman was quoted by defpro.com.
Lausman said the sailors had worked hard to turn the carrier into the best in the US navy force and he believed the patrol would be successful.
