MTV Vietnam on air
The Vietnamese version of the famous music channel MTV was first launched at 8pm yesterday on pay cable networks such as HTVC, VCTV, VNPT, VTC and K+.
Saigon Tiep Thi talked with Nguyen Phan Quang Binh, managing director of UTV that now holds copyright to the MTV Vietnam:
BHD (the parent company of UTV) has represented MTV in Vietnam for a long time. Why did it and UTV wait until now to produce it in Vietnam?
In recent years, subscription-based or pay TV services have grown really fast in Vietnam. Young Vietnamese are more dynamic and internationalized, thus it is the ripe time now.
MTV Vietnam will focus on pure Vietnamese programs. What are they and how are they produced?
There are three kinds in our channel. The first are international MTV programs translated and subbed in Vietnamese. The second are programs produced based on available formats of MTV in many countries or formats by other multinational media corporations. These shows will be chosen and produced to meet young Vietnamese tastes. The last kind will be shows that we produce ourselves, with our own formats.
There will be many stages in transforming the channel into a Vietnamese one. At first, shows from 20-22pm everyday will be in Vietnamese and will be broadcast again the next morning.

Two of the programs produced in Vietnam: MTV Thich Me and MTV Chart Attack are ready for broadcasting. We will also produce 32 songs by 32 singers who had interesting music projects in 2011 and by other new talents. These songs will be introduced to our viewers through the Vietnam Video Music Contest shown on our channel.
Vietnam has already had YanTV and Yeah1, music channels for teenagers. Does MTV Vietnam target a wider audience?
Our target will be viewers in the 15-34 age group. We hope to be a channel to connect young Vietnamese audience with new and modern music trends in the world.
Also, we hope to introduce Vietnamese music to the world through the most favorite Vietnamese songs, which will be shown on MTV Asia.
