A nine-month-old girl and her 55-year-old grandmother died when a train derailed in the northern province of Yen Bai Monday,VnExpress reported.

Initial information showed that the train from Hanoi was carrying over 400 passengers when it entered Van Yen District’s Dong Cuong Commune.

The engine then derailed, causing two further compartments to come off the tracks, witnesses said on the news website.

Khuong Thi Thinh and her granddaughter, Dinh Thu Phuong, died on the spot. The train driver Bui Van Them also suffered injuries.

Related agencies then transported the remaining train compartments to Yen Bai. They sent buses to take passengers to the train's final destination in Lao Cai Province.

Vu Dinh Rau, chief of Hanoi Gas Station, said the incident delayed five other trains. He added that they are still working to overcome the accident and its consequences.

Police said initial investigation revealed the accident happened because the ground was unstable from torrential rain the day before.
