Professor Ngo Bao Chau, the Vietnamese mathematician who won the world's most prestigious award in mathematics last month, has established a scholarship fund to support local students.
According to Chau, the fund will target research students and those who are academically gifted but with financial difficulties.
A panel of scientists, headed by Professor Ha Huy Khoai – former chief of Vietnam Institute of Mathematics, has been set up to choose eligible students.
The panel will also recruit scientists with expertise in certain fields to act as mentors to scholarship winners, Chau, chairman of the fund management committee, said.
Chau said he and the founders of the fund would not interfere in the selection process.
Chau said he hoped the fund would begin to grant scholarships in December. He added that it would rely on contributions from the founders and the US$15,000 he was awarded for winning the Fields Medal.
