Government gives $57,600 to do up Hoi An houses
The people’s committee of the central province of Quang Nam last week advanced VND1.2 billion (US$57,600) for the renovation of centuries-old houses in Hoi An’s old quarter.
The houses, on Bach Dang, Nguyen Thai Hoc, and Tran Phu Streets, are in severe danger of collapse.
The government has various policies for each type of house but provides a subsidy of at least 45 percent in each case. The owner of a house only needs to contribute 15 percent and can borrow the rest of the money interest-free for up to five years.
In 1999 UNESCO declared the old town of Hoi An a world heritage site for being a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port in the 15th to 19th centuries and having buildings with a unique blend of local and foreign influences.
Hoi An is a popular tourist site, attracting a large number of local and foreign tourists.
