A 3,000-seat-plus theater in Hanoi built to mark the city's millenial anniversary will evoke a sail coasting along the World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay, VnExpressquoted local authorities as saying Friday.
The Hanoi’s People’s Committee announced its decision Thursday to choose the design by Italian architect Renzo Piano, who designed the London Bridge and the New York Times Building.
Early this month the authorities had presented Piano’s design together with another one. Both designs had won a government-sponsored contest.
Nguyen Chi Tam, designing director of Highend Architecture – representative of Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Vietnam, said in the news website, that the famous architect has spent time studying Vietnamese and Hanoi cultures and used them in his work.
He has also worked with an organization in Britain to make the work energy-saving and closer to nature, Tam said.
According to the design, the theater will built at the West Lake with a lane more than 100-meters length leading to the West Lake Urban Area.
It will include a 1,200-1,500-seat section for classical concerts and a multi-functional performance section of 1,800 seats. In addition to the two main concert halls, the building will feature spaces for exhibitions, fashion shows and an outdoor performance area.
The construction will mostly rely on steel and glass. Glass water pipes will be used to reduce heat radiation for the first time in Vietnam.
The theater’s roof will be designed like the top of the crown of King Ly Thai To, who ordered Vietnam’s capital moved from Hoa Lu in the northern province of Ninh Binh to Thang Long (now Hanoi) in 1010. The roof will be a panel to receive solar energy, according to VnExpress.
Work on the grand theater is expected to start on October 6.
So far, most concerts and art performances in Hanoi are organized at the 900-seat Hanoi Opera House located near the famous Sword Lake. Early this year, Hanoi opened the Au Co Art Performance Center with 730 seats.
