Border guards in the central province of Binh Thuan Sunday said they have confiscated 95 kilograms of elephant tusks from a local who found them at sea and failed to inform the authorities.
Officials from the border service said that about a week ago Ho Minh Phong and his team of divers discovered a wooden box containing the tusks some 15 meters underwater.
The chest was recovered some 15 kilometers from the coast of Tuy Phong Beach, Vietnamnet reported.
Phong didn’t inform the authorities, but made plans to recover them for sale, the news source quoted the officials as saying.
Following a tip from a local resident, authorities confiscated the tusks from Phong last Friday, Vietnamnet said.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
