Resident donates edicts of Vietnam's last kingdom

One of the eight royal legal texts from the Nguyen Dynasty being donated to the Ha Tinh government

A Ha Tinh resident on Friday donated eight centuries-old royal edicts to the provincial cultural authorities.

The documents date back to the Nguyen Dynasty, Vietnam's last ruling family.

The documents were penned in 1860, 1861, 1862, 1864, 1868 and 1874 under King Tu Duc, the fourth emperor of the dynasty known for his staunch Confucianism and opposition to foreigners and innovation.

Rolled and kept in gilded wooden tubes, the texts chronicle the assignment of a local man, Tran Van Uc, to a number of government positions.

The papers were donated by Tran Sy Manh, 75, to the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The documents are considered precious historical and cultural materials.

During a parliament session earlier this month, deputies complained about the poor and rigid management of historical and cultural documents.

Many materials have been lost when local collectors passed away.
