Vietnamese-born author wins Canadian literary award

Kim Thuy, a Vietnamese-born author, has won Canada's Governor General’s Literary Awards
Canada recently bestowed its most prestigious literary award on a Vietnamese immigrant for her French fiction, local newspaper Saigon Tiep Thireported Monday.

Ly Kim Thuy was granted the 2010 Governor General’s Literary Awards at a ceremony in Ottawa, Canada last Thursday, the news source said.

The award honors English and French literature in seven categories: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, children's literature (one each for text and illustration), and translation.

Thuy won the award for her fiction, entitled Ru, which was published in January and has sold 45,000 copies so far, according to the newspaper.

The first work of the 42-year-old-author also won the RTL-Lire 2010 prize at Paris Book Fair on May 10, and was selected for the final of the Prix des 5 continents 2010 (the Five continents’ literary prizes) in October.

Now Ru is being translated into Spanish, Italian and German among other languages.

Born in Saigon, Thuy came to Quebec in 1978. She has earned degrees in law, linguistics and translation from the Université de Montréal.
