When schoolgirl brawls became brutal
Violence in schools became a hot topic and shook people after a number of video clips of schoolgirls fighting brutally were posted on YouTube this year.
A google search of “nu sinh danh ban” (schoolgirl fighting) turns up five million results.
People expressed concern over the growing trend of violence at schools and indignation at the attitude of other students who indifferently watch their classmates fight, occasionally capturing it on mobile phones.
People also raised questions about the failure of families and school authorities to educate youngsters in living healthy lifestyles.
Below are some of the most notorious brawls posted on YouTube this year:
1. Boys stabbed in school
On December 4 Q., N., and an unnamed boy, eighth graders at the District 4 Vocational Training Center in Ho Chi Minh City, were having a fight with an 11th grader, who ran to a lower floor.
When the three chased after him, a boy tried to talk them out of fighting. Suddenly another group showed up and stabbed him in the leg, and stabbed Q. and N. in the head and back.
2. Schoolgirl beaten, shirt torn off in class
A clip posted December 23 shows Nguyen Thi Hong Nham of Luong The Vinh High School in Quang Ninh Province beaten up in her classroom by six students from another school.
She is slapped and punched on the face and body, her shirt is torn off, and her hair is cut.
The police said after preliminary investigations that Nguyen Hai Yen, the leader of the attackers, decided to beat her out of jealousy since they both had a relationship with the same boy.
Police filed charges of “humiliating people,” "injuring people on purpose," and "disturbing public order" against 19-year-old Yen.
3. Schoolgirl beaten in Hanoi building
Some disturbing footage of a brawl between schoolgirls in Hanoi was posted October 10. The video shows two girls aged 14 and 15 slapping, kicking, and insulting a 13-year-old at Vincom 2 shopping mall.
The assailants, in school uniforms, pull the victim’s hair and kick her in the face, chest, and stomach. They then slam her on the floor, take off her shirt, make her kneel, and say “sorry.”
Two schoolboys who saw the violence merely shot it on their cell phone.
The police said the fight was sparked off when the two girls suspected the victim of calling them names.
4. Nghe An trio beats girl who keeps asking for reason
A clip posted September 14 shows three girls in Nghe An Province, one of them a karate champion, attacking another.
One slams her down on to the street by the hair and the others repeatedly kick her on the body, head, and face.
One of the attackers was later identified as Nguyen Thi Huong Tra, a 12th grader at Huu Nghi Private High School who won two gold medals at the recent national karate competition.
Passers-by intervened to stop the violence.
What makes the incident more shocking is the fact that the victim keeps pleading to know the reason for the attack.
5. Fighting in the park
On March 3 a clip showing schoolgirls fighting in a Hanoi park was posted online.
A short-haired girl repeatedly slaps another on the face and swears at her. Some other students sit on benches nearby and just look at the violence without doing anything to stop it.
Police said the victim was a 10th grader at Tran Nhan Tong High School and was beaten because she had stepped on the foot of the attacker in school.
The attacker was let off with a warning.
