Thanh Hoa residents seek to restore whale skeleton

Residents of Hau Loc District in the central province of Thanh Hoa are pooling money themselves to build a shrine for the skeleton of a 9.6-meter-long gray whale that washed ashore in 2004.

The 30-ton whale was found dead, and after it decomposed, its bone has been worshipped at the Tu Phu temple.

Local fishermen and authorities had asked the government for funds to restore the bone but there was no response.

In most parts of Vietnam, fishermen and other coastal residents revere the whale as a benefactor at sea.
