Footwear exports hit record high

Vietnam footwear exports for the first two quarters of 2011 reached US$3 billion in turnover, up 31 percent compared to the same period last year, said the Vietnam Leather & Footwear Association (Lefaso).

In June only, the country shipped abroad goods worth US$610 million in value, setting a new record for the industry.

Exporters have already received export orders for the six remaining months of the year, according to Lefaso.

This year, the number of export orders increases by 20 percent with prices going up by 7 to 10 percent.

However, many exporters worry they cannot fulfill all the contracts because of lack of labor force and other certainties.

Last year, Vietnam exported US$5.09 billion worth of footwear products, mainly to the US, Europe and Japan.

In 2011, Lefaso set the export target at US$5.5 billion.
