Road cable kills little girl in Ca Mau

A 4-year-old girl in Ca Mau province was killed yesterday morning, after the motorbike carrying her ran into a cable strung across the road.

The motorbike driver was Lu Van Ngoan, who was carrying Bui Thi Suong and her two children, Huynh Anh Thu, 17, and Duong Anh Thi, 4, on Road T29, Nguyen Phich ward, U Minh district.

Not seeing the cable, the driver rode his vehicle straight into the cable, throwing all of them down on the road.

Thi died instantly on the spot while the three others were seriously injured.

The incident was reported by passers-by to the local police, who rushed to the scene and took the victims to hospital.

Captain Nguyen Khac Diep, deputy head of the local investigation team, said the cable was strung by a team of workers who were installing a telecom system in the area.

They strung the cable to block the traffic so they could carry a telecom post in from a motorboat nearby.

The men, however, failed to put up a warning sign for travelers about the stretching cable, Diep said.

The workers, locals from Ca Mau province, were undertaking construction work for Bac Lieu Province Telecom Assembly and Installation Joint Stock Company after the company won a bid offered by military-run telecom group Viettel, the U Minh district investigators said.

On the afternoon of the same day, representatives of the company and the team visited the victims and offered them some preliminary financial support.
